Accreditation Counts
When paternity testing is performed, getting the test done at an accredited laboratory is important if the results are needed in court. Many times the results of a paternity test are needed in child support, social security, and adoption cases. If the results need to be admissible in court, then the test must be performed by an AABB accredited laboratory.
The AABB is the governing body of legal paternity DNA testing. It is an international association comprised of individual members and institutions, including hospital and community blood centers, transfusion and transplantation services, and umbilical cord blood banks. The AABB supports the highest standards of medical, technical, and administrative performance, scientific investigation, clinical application, standard setting, accreditation, and education.
While some companies offer non-invasive prenatal paternity testing, the AABB does not endorse this type of test. Results of this test would not be covered under the AABB accreditation. Recently, a member of an AABB-accredited laboratory commented that non-invasive prenatal paternity tests have a high rate of null results. Critics are skeptical because there is little information on this test, the accuracy of its results, its methods, and research.
